Second Transnational Meeting

Second Transnational Meeting

On 12 July 2022 Jagiellonian University in Kraków hosted an on-line meeting of FONTES Project. During this second transnational meeting over 15 participants from Palermo, Paris, Kraków and Fribourg (now Geneve) discussed several topics concerning the Project.

Punctually at 9 o’clock (Kraków time) Beatrice Pasciuta from Palermo formally opened the meeting and gave the floor to Maciej Mikuła who, on behalf of Jagiellonian University Team, virtually chaired the discussion. He introduced the schedule of the meeting that was focused on three main points: the handbook on legal historical sources, other educational outputs, and technical matters concerning the Project.

The first speaker was Emmanuele Conte from Paris who, as a leader of the Paris VI Team, introduced all work done up to now, and provided gathered participants with the information about upcoming tasks concerning the textbook. The discussion included, inter alia, the structure and language of the handbook, as well as division of work. Additionally, he presented a series of short podcasts on legal history he prepared in recent months. Their topics concern particularly history of sources of law.

The next part of the meeting was devoted to other educational outputs of the Project. The discussed subjects include, among others: the structure of practice-based course of legal historical sources and its connection with the handbook. Concluding the second part of the meetig, Noëlle-Laetitia Perret from Geneve presented developments of Geneve Team, that is, plans regarding preparation of podcasts and teaching materials.

After a virtual “coffee break” the meeting resumed. Noëlle-Laetitia Perret intruduced the details of summer school that will be organised in Fribourg and Neuchâtel in June 2023. Then, Emmanuele Conte outlined his plans on hosting a seminar on historical legal sources in Paris in February 2023. The next speaker – Maciej Mikuła – acquainted the audience with the Copernicus College website that could be used as a vehicle for FONTES Project e-course (including podcasts and accompanying teaching materials). He emphasised that features of Copernicus College platform should make the e-course easily accessible for users.

The last part of the meeting was devoted to the technical matters of the Project. On behalf of Kraków Team Kacper Górski presented the key points of disseminating the Project. Several issues were discussed, inter alia, the requirements regarding visual identity, direct and long-distance goals of propagating the Project, as well as primary and secondary tools of dissemination activites. One of the discussed issues was the presence of FONTES in social media. The next speaker – Łukasz Marzec from Kraków – presented developments in the field of cooperation with professional lawyers’ organisations. Then, the concept of bibliography of legal historical sources was discussed by Krzysztof Fokt from Kraków. Ultimately, Maciej Mikuła introduced the “IURA. Sources of Law from the Past” – the on-line database of digitised historical sources of law. He emphasised its usefulness for the outputs of the Project.

The proceedings were summarised by Maciej Mikuła. Then Beatrice Pasciuta officially closed the meeting.
