European Society for History of Law

The European Society for History of Law (ESHL) is an association aimed at promoting knowledge about legal history. The mission of the Society is to support and promote education and scholarship in the field of legal history, that is, history of law, Roman law, and the history of legal thought across Europe.

These goals are achieved through organizing conferences, lectures, seminars, excursions, and meetings during which legal historians present the results of their research and participants discuss up-to-date issues. The Society publishes the Journal on European History of Law, in which papers are accepted in English and German. The Society goes beyond the academic world and cooperates with the judiciary, administrative institutions, and practicing lawyers.

The Society cooperates with the Department of History of the State and Law of the Masaryk University in Brno, Czechia. Meetings are arranged several times per year during which guests from abroad present the results of their research.
