Noëlle-Laetitia Perret

Prof. ass. in medieval history at the University of Geneva, in charge of the Swiss coordination of the Fontes project. Professorial thesis (HDR) delivered by the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris.

She in charge of a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF): Treatises on the Ambassador: personal experience and the construction of a normative discourse (XIIIth-XVIth centuries)(PR00P1_185789). This project aims to trace the long - and slow - process of maturation, still unfinished at the beginning of the sixteenth century, which allowed the figure of the ambassador to acquire greater importance and take on much clearer contours in legal and political thinking. By analysing and editing treatises on ambassadors, written between the thirteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries, which have never been critically edited, this project will fill a research gap in the field. By drawing on this corpus, the proposed study will compensate for the lack of interest in this literature, which is nevertheless a primary source for understanding the development of diplomacy during the last centuries of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Among the sixteen treatises selected, particular attention will be paid to the pioneering and innovative treatises of Guillaume Durand (1230-1296), Bernard de Rosier (1400-1475) and Ermolao Barbaro (1454-1493).
